Question 1 Passions Erupt

The campaigns for and against Question 1 have been really heating up.  You’ve seen the ads at just about every commercial break.  The Op/Ed pages are full of healthy debate.  Even though this is a passionate issue things have remained relatively civil up until now.  I was hugely disappointed after I read the following.

No On 1 Campaign Counters “Replica” of Ad Used for Prop 8

It seems like I write one of these daily, but No On 1/Protect Maine Equality has again had to refute false claims made in an ad released by Yes On 1.  I assume this ad that was posted on Stand For Marriage Maine today is the one they reference in this release.  Don’t be fooled by fear.  Read No On 1’s reply below.  Be an active involved parent and you never have to be afraid of what is going on in your child’s education. Legal Memorandum Challenges Yes On 1 Claims

The No On 1/Protect Maine Equality has released a challenge to the “Laycock Letter” use in the recent Yes On 1 campaigns.   You can read the Laycock letter here (pdf warning)

The NO on 1/Protect Maine Equality campaign today slammed the latest attempt by the Yes campaign to distract voters from the real issues surrounding Question 1.  On Thursday, the Yes campaign produced — for the first time — a letter by University of Michigan law professor Douglas Laycock to Gov. John Baldacci urging him not to sign the bill unless it contained certain provisions Laycock claimed would address religious liberty. Continue reading

No On 1 Clarifies “Fitzgibbon Ad” Concerns

You may or may not have already seen the Stand for Marriage Maine’s first television ad.  The ad stated same-sex marriage in Maine will cause widespread legal conflict, church organizations could lose their tax exemption, and “homosexual marriage will be taught in schools whether parents like it or not”.  Gerald Weinand of Dirigo Blue, Bill Nemitz of the Portland Press Herald, and myself have address some of these concerns already. Stand for Marriage Maine & No On 1 Events

Stand for Marriage Maine will be hosting an event this evening.  The even till be held in the Augusta Civic Center from 6-8:30pm Sunday the 13th.  Admission is free, but media has been kept from attending the rally.  They will however be addressing their decision to keep the media out at the Civic Center at 4pm.  No on 1/Protect Maine Equality will be holding the first in a series of events around the  state beginning this evening.  At statement from No on 1 and more information after the cut.
